Dental Implants

Replace one or more missing teeth with safe, secure and strong dental implants

A missing tooth can cause untold misery and a lack of confidence for many patients.

While a hidden gap may be more noticeable to you than it is to others, it can still result in numerous problems for your overall oral health. It can become difficult to keep your teeth clean, as bacteria and small food particles are trapped and missed, increasing your potential for tooth decay, gum disease and bad breath.

Long-term, the effect on the health of your gums is significant. When a tooth is gone, the gum lacks the stimulation it would normally get when you eat, causing it to shrink. Your remaining teeth are therefore at a higher risk of also becoming loose and your facial features can also start to sag thanks to the lack of support inside your mouth.

If your missing tooth is highly visible then it’s likely to affect your confidence greatly, stopping you from smiling, talking or laughing. This can create restrictions on both a personal and professional level.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant consists of a strong titanium screw placed in the jaw to replicate the root of a tooth. It then holds a crown, bridge or denture securely in place, cementing itself as truly the modern way to replace a missing tooth.

Dental implants can be fitted anywhere in your mouth, top or bottom, providing you have healthy and strong gums and jawbone to support them.

Frequently asked questions

  • What are implants?

Dental implants are titanium screws that are placed directly into the jawbone. They can be used to replace a single tooth or several missing teeth, and also to secure loose dentures. The end results look, feel and function just like natural teeth.

  • Are dental implants suitable for everyone?

Dental implants are a suitable option for many patients, regardless of their age or condition of their teeth, but they are not ideal for everyone. Before beginning treatment, we consider a number of factors, including the health of your gums, your general health and your oral health. If there is not sufficient bone density in your gum to hold the implants in place, we may be able to perform a bone graft to help with this.

  • What are the advantages of dental implants?

Implants are fixed and permanent and often the ideal replacement for missing teeth. As they are anchored to the bone, they act just like a natural tooth. Patients with implants enjoy improved speech, appearance and a boost to their confidence and self-esteem.

  • What is involved in the implant procedure?

Dental implants are placed precisely and gently into the jawbone under local anaesthetic, and the gum is then stitched over the top using dissolvable stitches. The implant is then left to heal for 3-6 months, to allow it to fuse to the bone. The bone grows around the implant in a process known as osseo-integration, securing it firmly into place. Once fully healed, the implant can be used as a base for crowns, bridges or dentures.

  • Is the implant surgery procedure painful?

Most patients rarely complain of pain during or after the surgery. Your implants are placed using local anaesthetic so you won’t feel a thing. Some discomfort for the first few days following the procedure is normal, and can be controlled by regular painkillers. Most patients are able to return to their usual daily lives the next day with minimal disruption.

  • How long will dental implants last?

Dental implants are extremely long-lasting and can last a lifetime if properly looked after. This includes keeping up with regular brushing and flossing and attending regular check ups with your dentist.

  • Are dental implants susceptible to decay?

No, as they are made from artificial materials, implants can’t experience decay or cavities. However, you will still need to brush and floss regularly to keep the gum area around the implant protected and free from problems.

  • Is it hard to talk with dental implants?

No - as implants are securely held in place, you shouldn’t experience any difficulty with speaking. In fact, you may find talking becomes easier once the gap in your teeth has been replaced with the implant.
