If a tooth is chipped, in sport or an accident, for example, try to gather up the broken pieces of the tooth and take these to your emergency dentist who may be able to repair it. If you have a tooth knocked out completely, there are a few things that you can do straight away, which can increase the chances of being able to save the tooth in the future.
Always try to find the tooth and pick it up by the crown (not the root end). If the tooth is dirty, rinse it with water, but don’t scrub it as this eliminates important tissues from the tooth.
If possible, immediately put the tooth back in its socket. If this is done within five minutes, the tooth can likely be saved. If you are unable to place it back in place, then you can try to keep it in your mouth, next to your cheek, whilst you get to the emergency dentist.
Alternatively, you can place the tooth in a container of milk, but not tap water, and go straight to an emergency dentist. It is important to keep the root moist. Your tooth is likely be re-implanted and splinted to an adjacent tooth for 2-8 weeks. A root canal will probably be necessary for the tooth to survive.
Root canal treatment is often required after accidents, which causes the dental pulp to be exposed. If you need root canal treatment, our experienced dentists can offer this. Below we explore the procedure:-
First Visit
The contents of the pulp chamber and the root canals are removed and cleaned using sodium hypochlorite, which kills the infective bacteria. Medicaments are used to kill off infection and to fix the remaining organic tissue. The cavity is then closed with a temporary filling material. Antibiotics and analgesics may be provided at this visit.
Second Visit
The tooth is reopened on the second visit and the contents of the pulp chamber and root canals are removed using endodontic files. The chambers are again washed with the solution, Sodium Hypochlorite, Hydrogen Peroxide, local anaesthetic and lubricant. Your dentist will assess whether the root canal is still infected. If an infection is still present, the actions from the first visit will be undertaken again. This is carried out until the root canals are infection-free and dry.
Final Visit
The root canals are filed using endodontic micro-instruments into the perfect shape for filling. Then, the canals are dried and filled with a non-leaking material, such as rubber. The tooth is then restored.
