Keeping On Top Of Your Oral Hygiene At Christmas

21 December 2021

With just three days to go until the big day, most of us have already wound down for Christmas and are ready to relax and enjoy the festivities. But it is important to remember that plaque and tartar don’t rest for the holidays. At Aesthetique Dental Care, we enjoy a mince pie and mulled wine as much as the next person, but it is important to remember your oral health this season. The following tips will help keep your teeth clean and shiny over Christmas and New Year.

Eat in moderation – Not just limited to the holidays but especially important at this time, it is vital to consume sweet, fatty and calorific food and drink in moderation. It will make it easier for your teeth to fight against the detrimental effects of sugar and you will be less likely to develop cavities.

Maintain good oral hygiene practices – Stick to your regular brushing and flossing to ensure that your teeth are free of plaque. Make sure you’re brushing for two minutes and using mouthwash to get the freshest smile possible.

Stock up on cheese and raw vegetables – Good news for cheese lovers, the dairy product is especially beneficial for the mouth in general. It is widely known that cheese is packed full of calcium and phosphate which helps build strong teeth and bones, but it also helps balance the pH levels in your mouth, eradicating harmful acids and bacteria. Raw vegetables such as celery and carrots stimulate the gums and help generate saliva that cleanses the mouth. These veggies are also great sources of beta-carotene, which produces vitamin A, helping to build strong teeth.

Use a straw for fizzy or sugary drinks – Straws can limit the amount of sugary liquid that interacts with the teeth, ultimately resulting in less harmful bacteria and plaque building up on the surface, meaning you’re less likely to develop a cavity.

Keep on top of your routine check-ups and hygiene appointments – The best way to maintain excellent oral health is by regularly visiting your dentist and dental hygienist, so your teeth can be professionally cleaned and preventative advice can be given.
