Are You Nervous About Seeing Your Dentist?

Dentist using a tablet to write down an appointment.

If you answered yes, please don’t worry, you are certainly not alone. Did you know that 53% of the UK population suffers from fear or anxiety when visiting the dentist? This is cited on the useful website Dental Phobia. Some people are so worried about seeing their dentist that they avoid having regular dental appointments or getting vital treatment to protect their teeth. We understand these fears but our team of trained professionals here at Aesthetique Dental Care in Leeds have got your best interests at heart and will always put you at ease so you can get the best treatment possible.

Patient Concerns – We Understand

Over the years we have heard all the patient concerns when it comes to visiting the dentist. These include:-

  • Feeling out of control and out of your comfort zone
  • A needle phobia
  • Concern about potential pain
  • Bad childhood experiences of the dentist
  • Strange sounds and smells
  • Fear of being judged if their teeth are in poor condition

We understand these fears and will do everything we can to alleviate them. You will never be judged if you have not seen the dentist in a long time.

Dental Sedation

If you have any dental anxiety, please do not suffer in silence.  At our dentist in Leeds, we can offer IV sedation. It is a safe and highly effective way of making you feel completely relaxed and much more willing to undergo your dental treatment. You will remain conscious, but your worries and anxiety will be eliminated. You will be able to answer questions, but it is also highly likely that you will remember nothing of the procedure once it is finished.

Benefits of Sedation

  • Rapid onset of calming effects.
  • You will feel completely relaxed and anxiety-free.
  • Level of sedation can be tailored to suit your needs.
  • Can help you forget the treatment procedure.
  • Still allows you to communicate with the dentist.

Dental sedationSedation Treatment Steps

  • We will assess your general health, including your oxygen levels, and will take your blood pressure.
  • A very thin needle will be inserted into the back of your hand. This will have a soft plastic tube attached to it and this is how the sedative will be gradually delivered.
  • You will be monitored closely throughout the treatment process.
  • Additional pain relief medication will be required to reduce any discomfort, as sedation calms you but doesn’t offer pain relief.
  • Pain relief will be administered once you are suitably relaxed.
  • The effects of sedation will take a while to wear off and you will need someone to take you home and keep an eye on you.

Other Top Tips to Ease Dental Anxiety

Come to an understanding dentist like Dr Hamid and the team here. You can visit the surgery beforehand so that you can see the environment, meet the staff etc. Make sure you let the receptionist know that you’re anxious and what your fears are, so they know beforehand.

Pick a morning appointment so you don’t have to worry about your appointment all day. Let your dentist’s surgery help you. As a dental-phobic patient, it is often far easier to find reasons not to go to the dentist than to admit you are afraid.

However, taking that first step can be something as simple as speaking to the right person, so please pick up the phone to us on 0113 245 8066. The journey to better dental health and help with your fear is just one step away.
