Tis the season of weddings and summer holidays. Many of us are trying to get ‘beach body ready’ or are preparing for weddings and special Summer events but have you given any thought to your smile?
People will be snapping photos and it is great if you can feel confident about yourself and your smile.
One of the quickest and most effective ways to improve your smile is by having teeth whitening. Over time, our teeth slowly become less white and discolouring occurs for many reasons. This may be due to smoking, drinking tea and coffee and red wine or even eating strong-coloured foods such as berries and curries. Other times, discolouring may occur from taking certain medications. However, help is at hand to get that brighter, whiter smile in time for the party season.
Teeth whitening at the practice
Teeth whitening is probably the most effective method, and certainly the quickest of the options, so if time is a concern then this is probably your best bet.
Before treatment begins, you will be provided with a specially designed cover to protect your gums or a special gel can also be applied. The bleaching agent is then put directly on the teeth and a UV light is used to lighten the teeth to the desired shade.
The treatment usually takes around an hour, depending on the shade that is required. Results are usually instant but can sometimes need more than one treatment if the shade difference to be achieved is drastically different from the original tooth colour.
Teeth whitening at home
Home whitening kits are also available to use for teeth whitening. One advantage of these is that they can be used at the patient’s convenience. They are also usually cheaper than the in-practice teeth whitening systems.
Impressions of your teeth will be taken in the practice and then specially tailor-made trays will be produced to complete your teeth whitening treatment. You will be instructed how to use the bleaching gel in your trays and will need to wear it regularly for 30 to 6o minutes at a time over several weeks.
White spot treatment – Icon
Some people have white spots on their teeth, which can cause concern for them. White spots on teeth are very common and can occur from a wide range of factors including fluorosis, which is when a high intake of fluoride occurs when the teeth are developing; or decalcification when the loss of minerals can occur after orthodontic treatment.
Previously, the only way to treat these white spots was to use dental veneers or composite bonding, however, these types of treatment often require the removal of healthy tooth material so this is not ideal. Here at Aesthetique Dental, we can offer a minimally invasive technique called Icon. It uses the process of infiltration to blend in the white spots with the rest of the tooth. The results are very effective.
